Overall class reflection

My overall experience in this class and my reflection is that this class is very useful and helpful. I have learned many more things that I thought. I will use many of the things I have learned. This class
was  a TON of work and very time consuming work but it was worth it. I rather gain from a class with a lot of work then have a class with no work and learn nothing. I have achieved a goal of over coming my fear of being nervous to speak in front of people. I have done so many presentations in this class that I have over come that fear. I will admit I get a little nervous but not even close to what I use to be before this class. I was given a opportunity to teach a whole class for three different lesson. I feel that I learn better through experience. The fact that I was able to learn in and out of the classroom was great. I enjoyed the help that I received from my teacher and classmates. I will miss the class environment but some of the work I will not miss. I have lost night of sleep and have had many headache but I truly hope it all pays off.  If I were to give someone advice on this class I would say that ...

Get ready for a wild ride. I just want to start out by saying that this class has a lot to teach you. At first you probably will be overwhelmed with the amount of work . Do not worry. As long as you manage your time and stay on task everything will be alright. I will not lie this class is a lot of work but the end result will be the best. There will be things that Dr, Smirnova will show you that will amaze you. The amount of different technology out there to use in the classroom is amazing. Dr. Smirnova will introduce you to many of them, make sure you pay attention and listen because they will come to good use.  Do not be afraid to reach out to your classmates because they will be great resources and guides. Also Dr. Smirnova will be there to when you need her. If you can reach her through email she is also available  to skpe with you.Make sure also that you are always on e-class checking what there is to do every week. Even during the fieldwork at the school make sure you are doing the work that gets assigned on e-class. You have to manage your time and be prepared. I will say that this class was stressful and lots of work but I did gain a ton of knowledge. I now know so many different tools and ideas to use in my classroom in the future. Always go to class and be on time. Try to not miss any classes. This has been one of the classes that I have learned many things from. I now have a knew eye from social studies. I love the subject even more. You will learn some many different strategies and techniques to teach social studies and make it exciting . Enjoy and get ready for the ride. I hope you learn a lot and  . Good Luck and Always ask questions.

Mock interview!!

I truly enjoyed the mock interview. I was nervous at first which was odd because my classmates were the ones interviewing me . This make me think how nervous I will actually be in a real interview. I need to practice on staying calm and confident. I felt that this interview was helpful and made me open my eyes to many other things. I enjoyed being able to answer questions and knowing how to answer. I did get stuck on one question about pigs so that made me think of how I should review something just in case. When Perry asked me to sell myself I drew a blank , I did answer but I was not as confident as I thought I should have been.  I should be able to sell myself because the real world is full of competition and I need to show how I am different than the other. I want to win the job. This interview had taught me many things. I need to figure out what makes me different and better than other that want to teach. I need to gain more confidence and be proud of who I am. It was good practice to have.

If I had to chose a school that I would like to work at it would have to be at Perry's school. I like how they have a open door policy. The school seems like a community. I like how the school cares for there students and also loves parent involvement. I would lobe to work at a school that is like a community. Everyone helps one another and cares. I like when the principal has Assembly and gets to know the students in the school.

History, Social studies

I feel that many misunderstand History and Social Studies . They think of the subject as boring and that all you can do is read from text book and write essays. I dont blame them because when I was growing up this is how Social Studies was presented to me. I have learned that their is so much more to social studies then reading. The teacher can control students view on a subject. They just have toe present the information in an engaging and active way. They have to show students how to love what they learn. I have learned that using technology gets students excited and ready to learn. Creating more hands on activated and projects for the students. Letting the students explore topics and teaching themselves gets them to be active and participating. Social studies includes everything from current events to understanding how society evolved and was created. Social studies helps students to become apart of society and understand more of their surrounding. When I become a teacher I will make sure my students love social studies . I will engage them in creating hypothesis and making projects to share their results in the class. I will use technology to present videos, clips and quizzes to them in a different and entertaining way. I want to be that teacher that changes my student views of social studies. I am ready for the journey ahead of me.

To teach is to touch a life forever !!!

To Teach is to touch a life forever.

This is my philosophy of teaching.....
I think teaching is more than just a career that pays the bills. It is something you need to have passion for . Teacher for me is something that will reward me everyday, month and year. I want to see my students grow  progress  and become stronger students. To teach students is to not only teach but to care , to make a difference. If I can make a difference in one student's life I will be doing my job. Teachers are role models and they love to teach and learn. Everyday people learn and the same way my students learn from me I can learn from them. I will learn how to become a better teacher through my students.  I want me students to understand that school is not boring , homework does not suck. I believe teachers need to make connections with their students. They need to understand them inside and outside of school. Students are all different , they live different lives but teacher should understand their students and now more than just their names.  A teacher helps student grow and learn. They should teach students to love to learn. Teachers should always have students hold a memory or thought of them when they leave their classroom because teacher should touch lives and make a difference. Throughout this class I have grown so much and I have learned that social studies is not boring. Students just don't read from textbooks. There is so many ways to teach and engage students.

Newsela

Newsela is a great website. This is a website where there are articles provided to you online .You can find articles on many different themes, issue and places. I love this website. When I created my current event project my partner and I assigned articles through this website. This is  a good website to introduce to students in the classroom . The students have easy acces to current event from all over . Instead of students watching the news or reading a newspaper they van just hop online type what interest them and up pops a ton on articles. Newsela can be used to create quizes for the students. Teachers can assign readings and then have the students take the quiz at home or even in the classroom if computers are accessible. It is important that our students learn about computers and how to access thing on the internet because now even textbooks are offered online.  The articles are good and easy readings , they are not to long and you are able to change how difficult the reading is.

About me project

The first week of class we this were told to do an about me project this project was great. The thing I enjoyed most was that Dr. Smirnova listed a bunch of number that had different ways to create an about me project. This about me project was things about yourself to present to the class so we can all get to know each other. I chose to do a PowerPoint because I was not familiar with the other and the ones I did want were already chose. I am proud of this project because I learned how to included pictures of my family and a moving flag. I knew how to use the basic form of PowerPoint but I learned more. I am proud of this project because I learned knew things and this was something that brought me one step closer to change.
One interesting thing different about me now from then is I am not afraid to try new typed of technology that I am not familiar with. At the beginning of this class I did not want to try new things because I was nervous and scared. Now after 15 weeks in Dr. Smirnova's class I am not sacred to try new things. I wish I would have chose one of the other forms of technology ideas offered but if I had another opportunity like this I would pick the other ideas but I am probably familiar with so many more form of technology after this class.

I will used Dr.Smirnova's method of creating a list of different way to present yourself or even a project in my classroom. This is a great way to have students present projects in may different ways and they also learn the different types of technology through each other as they present. I will leave room for questions after the student present and if no one in the class ask questions I will. For example I would like to know was it easy or difficult for them to figure out how to use the technology they knew and what made it easy or difficult. I will also ask my students will they use this form of technology again for a presentation? why? or why not? I will love as a teacher to show my student many forms of technology because through Dr. Smirnova's class I have learned so many different thing that are going to be very useful to me in my future ,whether it is in school or as a teacher. It is important to show your students  the different types of technology because technology is growing everyday everywhere. This can benefits your students in the future. I know I am glad I have been introduce to so many new things and forms of technology.

Current Event

I did a current event project on New mapping. I never knew about this type of activity for current events until now. When I was in school the way we did current event was we had to find an article every week and write a summary of what the article was about . Then we would hand them to the teacher every Friday and that was it. We never spoke about our articles . We either received a check for doing it or a no check. I also use to get the magazine scholars that we would have to read through them and answer questions after we read the articles. We would go over the correct answers and that would be it.

Now that was some of my school experience, but through this current event we discussed news mapping. We created a PowerPoint. Then decided are theme was going to be ebola. We selected articles and assigned them to the students in our class as homework before we introduced our current event presentation. News mapping is when students read articles on the same theme but from different places around the world or between two different countries. For example we focus on America and Africa. We also gave our students the article. In the classroom the teacher can assign the articles or students can find them on their own but they have to have a common theme. Like I said before our theme was ebola. Then the students read the article and create a summary. For our rubric we had ask our students to write a short summary on what the article was about , then two facts that they learned and their view. The students had to bring the article into class. Then me and heather presented a global map on the board. Teacher can use a real life map if they have on in their class. The each students comes up and taps their summary on their place. They read aloud their summary. Then the next students comes up and does the same thing. The teacher then connects the places on the map. The teacher asks the student how the articles relate to one another. There should be some form of connection. In our presentation the connections where people traveling out of Africa into America and having to be monitor to make sure their were no cases of ebola. Then we discussed with our students how current event all over the world can effect America. How it is important for us to be aware of what happens in other areas.

I enjoyed this current event activity. It was interesting and engaging. It was different form what I did when I was a kid at school. I would differently use this in my classroom in the future. In my classroom there would be time where I would choose the theme and the article but I would definitely also let my students pick a theme as a class. The they would have to find articles in groups that relate to the them they chose. This is a create activity. It gets the students working together and also they learn connection between places. Then by the end of the period or marker they will be a bunch of lines or pins connected to one another with string on the map.

Cooperative learning

For the cooperative lesson the students had to create a project and then present it to the class. Each group was given a different project to create. Each group had a rubric to follow so they would know what exactly their task was suppose to have on it.
Each group had to state what colony they received, who the important people were, the resources of the colonies, why the colony was created, what people lived their and why.One group had a poster board and they were given pictures to place on the poster given to them. Another group had to create a brochure, another had to make a newspaper and the last one was a poem or rap. The students enjoyed this task. They all worked nicely together and had great end results. They all worked  together to have their projects all ready and then after they presented the students had to evaluate their self and group on a worksheet given to them.

Inquiry lesson

For our second lesson of field work we had to do an inquiry lesson. This lesson seemed difficult yo understand . I understood that the students needed a problem to solve and that they had to figure out the conclusion using the evidence they had. It was just difficult creating the lesson itself. The kids were supper excited when Hanna and I announced that they were going to be detectives. The students were given a crime and then evidence. They had to figure out in which colony the crime was committed and who did it. I loved the idea behind the lesson I just wish we had more time because the lesson could have went smoother. It also did not help that this day was a Friday and it was Halloween so the students were filled with energy. The final result of the lesson was a good turn out. I was very thankful that my classmates were very helpful throughout the lesson. Each one was at a table helping the children understand and go through their problem. I felt this was great and help Hanna and I out a bunch. I will admit trying to teach on a time frame is not to exciting . It makes everything stressful but it is wonderful to see the students work together and figure their task out. The students in our class were smart and always ready to learn social studies. This experience has helped me to learn for the next time I need to teach an inquiry lesson to my students.

Dine' tribe

I was given the task of teaching my peers about the Dine' tribe. After doing research about this tribe I found out that this tribe was also known as the Navajo tribe.  I used online resources and YouTube to  find information and videos for my presentation.

Dine' Tribe

Field work first day experience

For my first day teaching at Bishop Dunn's 5th grade class. I taught with Hanna and we were teaching the students about the thirteen colonies, Our first lesson plan was a Direct lesson. A direct lesson is when the teaching gives the students new information. The students have to review in between slides to make sure that the students are paying attention and also that they understand. After watching all the other groups that taught their lesson I had a better understanding on how to teach direct lesson. I was very nervous at first because I was worried about time.   We made sure we reviewed over what the students should know . Then we started with giving them the information about the thirteen colonies . We split the colonies into the three parts and taught the New England colonies then went into the Middle and Lastly the Southern Colonies. We discussed how the colonies were formed , the resources in each colony and the important people involved. W e used  a power point to present are information and then did an activity together with the students. The students  were given a crossword puzzle for homework.

Artifact powerpoint

I really enjoyed doing this assignment. It was great to be able to get to know more things about Dr.Smirnova and what she has accomplished. She is  was involved in school, and lived in Russia for a long time . Russia seems to be a huge part of her and that is very interesting to me. The objects she owns are beautiful and unique in my eyes.

Reflection on chapter 11

I did not get much from chapter 11 to answer my question. I had question 10 and the chapter did not say much about teaching using the internet. It gave maybe one or two things. I felt that the chapter was helpful with other information. It was helpful in learning what history is about and how to go about teaching certain parts of history. The book also gave a lot of information about students and how they learn history. I did my best to answer the question with the little bit of information I received from the book and I used the outside information I got from my social studies methods class.

 10. Discuss and describe multiple roles for the Internet in the teaching of history and evaluate the practicality of each.

The internet has many role in teaching history in the classroom. The internet can be used to create active games for student to learn and be engaged in history.  Their are many games online that students can use to solve problems like historians use to do. Some other things that can be found online are drills and practices. The internet is a helpful resource for students to find information about history. There are articles, blogs and websites that the students can engage in. The articles can help students for research projects to learn more about people in history. The blogs can be used to have class discussions and students can add images or videos to their blogs to show others. The internet can get  videos of people, objects and traditions. Youtube can be used to show students information about history.  The internet can also be use to help teachers to receive more information at a low cost.  The internet is a great tool for students to experience something different and new. The students can use the internet to present projects in an interesting way. They can use powerpoint, movenote, or prez. These are website that can present students work creatively. If students have a hard time presenting in front of classmates they can use movenote to record themselves and just play the video in class. The internet widens learning and expands children's minds. They have access to many different information and tools that can help them in or out of the classroom. Also teachers can use the internet to present notes and activities in an engaging and interesting way. The teacher can also use the internet for quizzes or test.  The internet broadens learning and offers many opportunities for creative learning experiences. Students in this generation are growing up with technology so it is important to incorporate it in the classroom. It makes learning more active and interesting. The teacher can find information quicker and easier.

My graphic organizer

When looking at the other graphic organizer  from the girls in the class I noticed we had many similar answers. Most of us came to the conclusion when it came to the definition of assessment . it involves collecting data of students work. Also the three types of assessment were similar for everyone. It was interesting reading what other learned from the reading and how they found it useful. I liked how everyone had something different. There were people that talk about getting the children involved and other that spoke about how they would give test. Everyone had something they retained from the reading but when it came to the organizer many of our answers were similar. I was a little confused at first about what was not an assessment but by looking at others answers I now have a better understanding. Everyone got the  different information from reading but also many of us  found different parts interesting. we also would use certain assessment rather than other in the classroom. I feel this reading will be helpful in the classroom because we all should know when to assess our students and what is the best way to assess them.
